Avocados are fruits which grow on Persea Americana tree, found in Mexico and Central America. Avocados are often referred as 'alligator pear'. Avocados are spherical. It contains a single seed in its large berry. The flesh is smooth and is yellow in colour. Avocados belong to the flowering plant family of bay laurel, camphor and Lauraceae along with cinnamon. Avocados are best grown in tropical and Mediterranean climates.

Avocados can be listed as the top 10 best cholesterol lowering foods. One avocado a day will help in fighting bad cholesterol from the human body.
A study has found Avocados can help in reducing bad cholesterol in just five weeks. The study was conducted by researchers at Pennsylvania State University. The findings from the study were published in Journal of the American Heart Association. The primary focus of the study was to change the eating habits of people and wanted them to eat healthy diet that includes one avocado a day.

People with different age group were required for the study. The researches called upon 45 healthy, overweight patients who belonged to age group of 21-70. The patients were thoroughly reported healthy cholesterol and blood pressure levels. Particularly the patients were given three different types of cholesterol -lowering diets because the researchers wanted to see effect on low density lipoprotein (LDL) or Bad Cholesterol.
Three different diets included, first had lower fat without an avocado, second had moderate fat without an avocado and third diet had moderate fat with one avocado a day. The patients were required to spend five weeks at the research Centre and to try out each of the diets in that period. Subsequently, the cholesterol levels of the patients were also tested. It was seen that in overweight patients their bad cholesterol or (LDLs) showed improvement which also meant that they are now less prone to heart disease.
The less use of Avocados is mainly because people are not aware how to include avocados in their daily diet. Most people particularly use avocados with the preparation of guacamole. However, Avocados can be taken with salads, vegetables, sandwiches, chicken and fish. Sometimes avocados can be expensive to buy as well, mainly in seasonal time.
