Is it possible to get pregnant while menstruating? By Indira IVF •

Quite a lot of people mistakenly believe that sex during menstruation does not cause pregnancy. However, IVF doctors from the top infertility centers and IVF hospitals claim that this
is very far from the truth.

Menstruation, also addressed as periods or menses, is a natural phenomenon that occurs
in woman's life. But what exactly is menstruation? According to experienced
gynecologists and experts from admired Fertility clinics in Delhi, the ovaries in a woman's
body expel an egg every month. This process is called ovulation. Before ovulation, the
uterine wall gets thickened in order to prepare it for fertilization and the consequent
implantation of the egg. If the egg is not fertilized by a sperm within a day or up to
48 hours of ovulation, it is expelled out of the body along with the blood that had
lined the uterine wall. This is when a woman menstruates.

Menstruation lasts for two to eight days for most women and repeats after a gap of 28 to
32 days. It is believed that since an egg is expelled out of the body in menstruation, sexual
intercourse during this time will not result in pregnancy. Conversely, the gap between
every menstrual cycle varies in different women. It may be 28 in some and 30 in others
while 32-35 in the rest. In some women, ovulation might occur shortly after
menstruation such as within two to three days from menstruation because of their short
duration of menstruation cycle. In such a case, if a couple have sex during menstruation,
the sperms can survive for three to five days, can stay in the body of the female and
would still be capable of fertilizing the egg that will be produced by the ovaries around
the same time. Thus, the chances of fertilization are high.

In addition, some women experience light bleeding or spotting during ovulation. This is
completely normal and nothing to worry about.  Nonetheless, many of these women
mistake it to be their period. Having unprotected sexual intercourse during this time
based on the aforementioned myth can absolutely result in pregnancy.

Additionally, if the couple has indulged in sexual intercourse during the female's
periods and are worried about conceiving. Then they must keep an eye on certain
symptoms of implantation or pregnancy such as bleeding, dizziness, nausea and others
indicating a successful implantation or nausea, swelling, excessive craving,
vertigos and more indicating a pregnancy.

In addition, chief doctors and IVF experts argue that the best option to prevent pregnancy
at any stage of the menstrual cycle is using precautions like condoms, birth control pills
and others.
